Kawasaki FR-Series Cross-Reference: Filters, Plugs & Oil

One page for the whole residential FR line: FR541V, FR600V, FR651V, FR691V and FR730V. Genuine Kawasaki numbers, the aftermarket crosses worth buying, and the spots that actually differ between engines.

The Kawasaki FR series runs under more residential zero-turns than any other engine family I sell parts for, and the good news is they share most of their consumables. The spark plug, oil filter and fuel filter are common across all five engines. Only two things move as you go up in size: the air filter changes at the FR651V, and the FR600V has a fuel-filter wrinkle worth knowing. Here’s everything in one place, straight from the parts counter.

Confirm your engine first

The engine model is stamped on the blower housing or a label near the recoil. It’s not the same as your mower’s model number. Match the engine label before you order, because the FR, FS and FX families share a lot of look-alike parts that don’t actually interchange. And grab the spec/code number off that same label. On some builds it changes which oil filter, pre-filter or fuel filter you need (see below).

Kawasaki FR engine label reading FR651V-HS05-R, showing engine model and spec/code number
The engine model (FR541V, FR730V, etc.) is on the blower housing, separate from the mower’s model number. This label reads FR651V–HS05–R: model FR651V, spec/code HS05.

A Note on Spec Numbers

The numbers above cover the standard FR builds, but here’s something worth knowing: Kawasaki builds one base engine to many different spec (code) numbers, and a mower brand like Cub Cadet, Exmark or Bad Boy can order it built to their preference, with or without an air pre-filter, with the standard or upgraded fuel filter, or with one of two oil filters (49065-0736 or 49065-0734). They’re all the same engine model, but the parts list can differ. Standard parts diagrams default to the base model, so if you order by model alone or if a counterperson looks it up without your spec number you can end up with a part that doesn’t match your machine. Pull the spec/code number off the engine label and match to that. (This runs across the FR, FS and FX families. Here the FS-series guide goes deeper on it.)

Air Filters 11013-0727 & 11013-0752

This is the one part that splits the lineup. The FR541V and FR600V use Kawasaki 11013-0727 (aftermarket: Rotary 14207, Stens 102-463). The larger FR651V, FR691V and FR730V use 11013-0752 (aftermarket: Stens 102-442, Rotary 16509).

One thing to know on the bigger engines: Kawasaki does not supply an outer foam pre-filter for the 11013-0752. The Rotary 16509 ships with a pre-filter wrap. That’s fine, and if you’d rather run it the way Kawasaki designed it, you can simply pull the pre-filter off. If you do want the foam pre-cleaner, the Kawasaki part is 11013-7046 (aftermarket crosses: 100-801, 108-822 or 12797). Either way, replace the filter at least once a season, sooner in dusty conditions, and tap it out rather than blowing it out with high-pressure air, which tears the media.

Spark Plugs 92070-7004 ×2

Every FR engine here uses the same plug, and each is a V-twin, so you need two. Kawasaki’s number is 92070-7004, a re-branded NGK BPR4ES, so an NGK BPR4ES off the shelf is the same plug, and Rotary 9873 is the aftermarket cross. They come pre-gapped from the factory, so they go in straight out of the box; verify the gap if you like, but you shouldn’t need to set it. Replace both at the same time so the engine runs even.

Fuel Filter 49019-0031 (and the FR600V exception)

Four of the five engines, FR541V, FR651V, FR691V and FR730V use Kawasaki 49019-0031. The FR600V is the exception: its standard fitment is 49019-7005, with 49019-0031 available as the upgrade I’d put on it. In fact 49019-0031 is the upgrade option on any FR, FS or FX engine where it isn’t already the primary. It’s the better filter across the board.

This is the one place I tell people to stay genuine across the board. The cheap universal inline fuel filters are less than optimal on these engines with wrong micron rating, weaker housings, and inconsistent flow while it’s a couple-dollar part protecting a carburetor that costs a great deal more. Buy the real Kawasaki filter.

Oil Filter 49065-0736

The spin-on oil filter on most FR builds is Kawasaki 49065-0736, with Rotary 6929 or ECOGARD SE-1 as reliable aftermarket crosses. Note that some spec numbers call for 49065-0734 instead (aftermarket cross: ECOGARD X4476), if your spec lists it, use it. Change it with every oil change not every other on air-cooled engines that work this hard.

Engine Oil 99969-6296 & Capacities

All five engines take the same Kawasaki 99969-6296. The FR541V and FR600V hold roughly 1.8 quarts (grab two quarts); the larger FR651V, FR691V and FR730V hold roughly 2.2 quarts (grab three). Use the viscosity called out in your operator’s manual for your temperature range.

About those capacity numbers

They’re nominal, not exact and they already count a full oil filter as part of the capacity. When you change oil, the new filter soaks up some of what you pour in, so going strictly by the quart can read low. Always finish on the dipstick: add most of the oil, run the engine a moment to fill the filter, shut it off, let it settle, then top off to the full mark. Never just pour in the rated amount and walk away.

Do not use automotive oil

Car oils are formulated for liquid-cooled engines and have had their zinc/ZDDP anti-wear additive reduced over the years to protect catalytic converters. Air-cooled engines like the FR series run considerably hotter and lean harder on that anti-wear film, so automotive oil leaves them under-protected. Kawasaki’s 99969-6296 carries the formulated zinc additive package these engines were designed around. Stick with it.

Kawasaki Tune-Up Service Kits

If you’d rather grab everything in one shot, Kawasaki bundles the routine maintenance parts into a factory service kit. Two cover the FR line:

FR-Series Parts FAQ

Is there a Kawasaki service kit for the FR engines?
Yes. The FR541V and FR600V use service kit 99969-6669 (supersedes 99969-6541). The FR651V, FR691V and FR730V use 99969-6671 (supersedes 99969-6543), which also covers the FS series. Confirm the kit contents match your air filter and spec number.
Are Kawasaki FR-series filters interchangeable across engines?
Mostly. The spark plug, oil filter and fuel filter are common across the FR541V, FR600V, FR651V, FR691V and FR730V. The air filter changes: FR541V/FR600V use 11013-0727, while FR651V/FR691V/FR730V use 11013-0752.
What spark plug do Kawasaki FR engines use?
All of them use Kawasaki 92070-7004, a re-branded NGK BPR4ES. They’re V-twins, so you need two, and they come pre-gapped. Rotary 9873 is a common cross-reference.
How much oil does a Kawasaki FR730V, FR691V or FR651V take?
About 2.2 quarts with the filter — approximate, and counting a full oil filter, so always finish to the dipstick. The FR541V and FR600V are smaller at about 1.8 quarts.
Can I use automotive oil in a Kawasaki FR engine?
No. Air-cooled engines need more zinc/ZDDP anti-wear additive than modern car oils provide. Use Kawasaki’s formulated oil, P/N 99969-6296.
Which fuel filter does the FR600V use?
The FR600V’s standard filter is 49019-7005, with 49019-0031 as the recommended upgrade. The FR541V, FR651V, FR691V and FR730V all use 49019-0031.
Does the Kawasaki FR651V air filter come with a pre-filter?
Kawasaki doesn’t supply an outer foam pre-filter for the 11013-0752 (FR651V/FR691V/FR730V). The aftermarket Rotary 16509 includes one; leave it on or remove it to match the factory setup.
