Kawasaki FX-Series Cross-Reference: Filters, Plugs & Oil

The entire FX big-block line in one place from FX481V all the way to the FX1000V. Genuine Kawasaki numbers, the Rotary and Stens crosses worth buying, and the spec-number traps that change which air filter and oil filter your engine actually takes.

The Kawasaki FX series is the heavy-hitter of the family; the big-block commercial engine you find on the larger zero-turns and the machines that mow for a living. It shares the family DNA: the same spark plug, the same oil, the same fuel filter across the whole line. Where the FX earns its own guide is the air filter. Several FX engines run a two-piece canister with an inner and outer element, a couple can be built two different ways, and the oil filter steps up partway through the line. Get the engine model and spec number right and every one of these parts falls into place. Here it is from the parts counter, top to bottom.

Confirm your engine model AND spec number

The engine model (FX481V, FX730V, FX1000V, etc.) is on the blower housing or recoil label. It is not the same as your mower’s model number. On the FX line you also want the spec/code number off that same label, because it decides which air-filter setup (single, dual canister, or tapered-inner) your engine actually takes. More on that below.

On the FX series, the spec/code number is as important as the model, it pins down the exact air-filter build.

Why Two of the “Same” Engine Take Different Parts

This is the part that trips up even good counter people. Kawasaki builds one base engine, an FX801V say, to dozens of different spec (code) numbers. A mower brand like Cub Cadet, Exmark, Bad Boy or Scag can order that engine built to their preference: with the standard canister air filter or the tapered-inner version. They’re all stamped “FX801V,” but the air-filter parts list isn’t identical.

Standard parts diagrams default to the base model. So if you order by engine model alone or a counterperson looks it up without your spec number you can walk out with an air filter that doesn’t seat in your housing. The fix is simple: pull the spec/code number off the engine label (it’s a separate line from the model, often after a dash or labeled “CODE”) and match to that. This same spec-number variation runs across the FR, FS and FX families. It’s not unique to one engine.

Air Filters 11013-7048 / 7044+7045 / 7038+7039

The air filter is the one part that genuinely changes across the FX line, so it’s worth knowing the three setups before you order.

Single round filter — FX481V, FX541V, FX600V

The smallest FX engines use one round filter: Kawasaki 11013-7048. Aftermarket crosses are Rotary 11842 and Stens 100-533. The Rotary and Kawasaki interchange freely; replace at least once a season, more often in dust, and tap it clean rather than blasting it with high-pressure air.

Standard canister, outer + inner — FX651V through FX850V

From the FX651V up, most of the line uses a two-piece canister with an outer and a separate inner safety element. The outer is Kawasaki 11013-7044 (Rotary 11841, Stens 102-305); the inner is Kawasaki 11013-7045 (Rotary 11865, Stens 100-780). Replace the outer on schedule and inspect the inner each time. The inner is your last line of defense if the outer ever fails.

Outer canister filter — Kawasaki 11013-7044 (Rotary 11841 / Stens 102-305). Always replaced as a set with the 11013-7045 inner.

Tapered-inner option — FX801V, FX921V, FX1000V

The FX801V, FX921V and FX1000V can be built two ways. Some carry the standard 11013-7044 + 11013-7045 canister above; others use a system with a tapered inner filter. On that build the outer is Kawasaki 11013-7038 (Rotary 12786, Stens 100-656) and the inner is Kawasaki 11013-7039 (Rotary 12787, Stens 100-660). The Rotary and Kawasaki filters interchange. Stens uses their own design here. If you go Stens, plan on buying the inner and outer together so they seat as a matched set. This is exactly why the spec number matters: two FX1000V engines can take completely different air filters.

Tapered-build outer — Kawasaki 11013-7038 (Rotary 12786 / Stens 100-656). Fits the FX801V, FX921V and FX1000V tapered-inner air-filter system.
Kawasaki 11013-7039 tapered inner air filter for FX801V, FX921V and FX1000V (Rotary 12787, Stens 100-660)
Tapered inner element — Kawasaki 11013-7039 (Rotary 12787 / Stens 100-660). Pairs with the 11013-7038 outer; if you go Stens, buy inner & outer together.

Spark Plugs 92070-7004 ×2

Same plug as the whole FR/FS/FX family, and each engine is a V-twin, so you need two. Kawasaki 92070-7004 is a re-branded NGK BPR4ES. The NGK off the shelf is the same plug. They come pre-gapped, so they install straight out of the box; replace both at once so the engine runs even.

Fuel Filter 49019-0031

The FX series uses Kawasaki fuel filter 49019-0031. It’s a couple-dollar part protecting a fuel system that costs a great deal more, so stay with a genuine Kawasaki filter or a quality equivalent rather than a cheap universal inline filter. Replace it once a season along with the rest of the tune-up parts.

Oil Filter 49065-0736 / 49065-0734

The oil filter steps up partway through the line. The smaller FX engines like FX481V, FX541V, FX600V, FX651V, FX691V and FX730V use Kawasaki 49065-0736. The big-block engines from the FX751V up (751, 781, 801, 820, 850, 921, 1000) use Kawasaki 49065-0734, which crosses to Rotary SE-1. Change the filter with every oil change, and match it to your engine model. This is one more reason to confirm the spec number rather than guessing.

Engine Oil 99969-6296 & Capacities

Every FX engine takes the same Kawasaki 99969-6296. Capacity is where they spread out, so buy by the engine:

  • FX481V — ~1.8 qt (grab 2)
  • FX651V — ~2.0 qt (grab 2)
  • FX541V, FX600V, FX691V, FX781V/781A, FX801V, FX820V/820A, FX921V, FX1000V — ~2.1 qt (grab 3)
  • FX730V, FX751V — ~2.2 qt (grab 3)
  • FX850V — ~2.4 qt (grab 3)

Use the viscosity called out in your operator’s manual for your temperature range.

About those capacity numbers

They’re nominal, not exact and they already count a full oil filter as part of the capacity. The new filter soaks up some of what you pour in, so going strictly by the quart can read low. Always finish on the dipstick: add most of the oil, run the engine a moment to fill the filter, shut it off, let it settle, then top off to the full mark. Never just pour in the rated amount and walk away.

Do not use automotive oil

Car oils are formulated for liquid-cooled engines and have had their zinc/ZDDP anti-wear additive reduced over the years to protect catalytic converters. Air-cooled big-block engines like the FX series run considerably hotter and lean harder on that anti-wear film, so automotive oil leaves them under-protected. Kawasaki’s 99969-6296 carries the formulated zinc additive package these engines were designed around. Stick with it.

FX-Series Parts FAQ

What air filter does the Kawasaki FX series use?
It depends on the engine. The FX481V, FX541V and FX600V use a single round filter, 11013-7048 (Rotary 11842 / Stens 100-533). From the FX651V up, most engines use a canister: outer 11013-7044 + inner 11013-7045. The FX801V, FX921V and FX1000V can also be built with a tapered-inner system, outer 11013-7038 + inner 11013-7039. Confirm by spec number.
Why does my FX engine take a different air filter than the diagram shows?
The engine spec/code number controls the exact build. The same FX model can carry the standard canister filter or the tapered-inner version, and the oil filter changes across the line too. Diagrams default to the base model, so match to your spec number, not just the engine model.
What spark plug does the FX series use?
Kawasaki 92070-7004, a re-branded NGK BPR4ES. Each engine is a V-twin, so you need two, and they come pre-gapped. Replace both at once.
What oil filter does the FX series take?
The smaller engines (FX481V–FX730V) use 49065-0736. The big-block engines from the FX751V up use 49065-0734, which crosses to Rotary SE-1. Change it with every oil change.
How much oil does an FX engine hold?
It ranges: FX481V ~1.8 qt; FX651V ~2.0 qt; most of the 541V–1000V engines ~2.1 qt; FX730V and FX751V ~2.2 qt; FX850V ~2.4 qt. Approximate and counting a full filter — finish to the dipstick.
Can I use automotive oil in a Kawasaki FX engine?
No. Air-cooled engines need more zinc/ZDDP anti-wear additive than modern car oils provide. Use Kawasaki 99969-6296.

Know Your Spec Number

On the FX line it’s the difference between the right air filter and one that won’t seat. Pull the spec/code number before you order and you’ll never buy that part twice.
